One response to “Joan in the Dark”
Things aren’t exactly all party and pancakes here on the homefront, although I suppose it’s relatively stable for the moment. It’s January here and we are still treated to cold and colds every other week, on top of all the usual challenges. But … let’s leave that for a little while and let me tell you that I am SO glad this story is finally finished.
It started around mid-December and then The Usual Things Happened, but now I finally found out how to round it off. The total word count is about 7.5K and what you see here is only half of it. As mentioned in the post, if you would like a free copy do contact me.
In this story we finally hear from Dave himself, as the main protagonist and we get a lot of his background through flashbacks as well. There’s not that much about Carrie and Jon and Michael (and Emma) back home in Yuma, although the first flashback establishes – what has already been hinted in previous stories – that Dave has a very special relationship to his sister-in-law and autistic nephew.
I did a lot of research on this one about Mali and all the various rebels and jihadists who (still) fight there, so if you know something about the country and come across any mistakes, please let me know.
The soundtrack for this one is Leonard Cohen’s “Joan of Arc”.
It was deep into his fiery heart
he took the dust of Joan of Arc,
and then she clearly understood
if he was fire, oh she must be wood.
I saw her wince, I saw her cry,
I saw the glory in her eye.
Myself I long for love and light,
but must it come so cruel, must it be so brave?
